New Site Feature
« on: January 01, 2009, 11:50:26 PM »
I have added a new feature to the site.
Hopefully it will help us visualize where fellow hams live. In part, this has been on my mind already, and in part, it has been spurred by a recent question about nets located near Provo, UT. Well, this feature will hopefully help figure out who is where!

Drum roll........

A Google Map!  ;D

OK, here's the deal. On the menu at the top of the page, there is a new option: MAP.
Click it. Under the map, there is a link where you can set the pin on the map for your profile (you can also click Here). No pins are placed automatically. You have to opt in by placing your own pin yourself.

I realize that all necessary information is already a matter of public record, I like this because you can choose whether a pin is displayed for you and where the pin sits. It doesn't have to actually be on your address, close is close enough!

I don't get a map up on my profile.  Is that because I live outside of the US?

If you visit the MAP link at the top of the page, do you see a Map?

If you see the map, you should be able to adjust your map pin location just fine.
There shouldn't be any limitation on being within the US or elsewhere.
Try clicking the link on the bottom of the Map or this:
Click here to go place your pin if you have not already.

Let me know how it works out... If there's a bug, I'll get on it straight away.

Still does not work for me.  I have taken a screen shot which I have attached to this post. Perhaps it has something to do with my browser security settings?

I really like this feature. It's great for helping visualize where everyone is located. Perhaps the map could be exported to Google Earth format for download by members.  Thoughts?

This is a very helpful screenshot!

Internet Exploder isn't displaying the HTML correctly. Do you have Firefox on your computer? Can you try it there?

What version of IE are you using? Is it a Beta version?
I will forward the screenshot to the developers and see if they have any idea why it's not rendering right.

The developer of the package that provides the maps wanted me to ask you the following:

-        What version of Internet Explorer are you using? (6,7,8beta)
-        How long did you wait for the Google Member Map to load? (It can take time sometimes)
-        Is this the first time this problem has happened or has it happened before?
-        Does it work fine while viewing on an earlier version of Internet Explorer?

It is IE version 7. I waited a few minutes for the page to load.  I have a fast ADSL connection.  I will try on my laptop which is running IE 6.  I will also load firefox.

Well, it did not work with IE, it did work with Firefox....sorta. I get the map and when I click on my location I get an orange flag with a dot. I don't know how to save this flag, or change it to a blue flag.

Operator error!!! I'm sure.

You see, wire telegraph is a kind of a very, very long cat. You pull his tail in New York and his head is meowing in Los Angeles. Do you understand this? And radio operates exactly the same way: you send signals here, they receive them there. The only difference is that there is no cat.

The flag is orange when you're placing it. You can zoom in and out to get as accurate as you want when placing it. When you're done placing the flag, at the bottom of the page (Just under the map) is the "Change Profile" button. Click that and it'll be saved.

When you view the Map from the menu bar at the top of the page Or Click Here the flag pins should all be blue. I don't know why there is a difference in the colors but I will see if I can make them the same.

OK, this is fixed. It was the theme to the website (hence the new theme) ... If someone wants to help make a new logo for the top of the page, the help would be appreciated!
