Geomagnetic Storms Preparedness

The need for solar activity from the Sun is well documented for various reasons. It contributes to the stability of out environment, we use it's effects on the ionosphere for sky wave propagation, etc. But, does anyone have contingency plans in place for when things go bad? There have been a number of
online articles
[newscientist.com] regarding the potential for a superstorm in 2012 on a scale never documented. They are saying this could rival and exceed the superstorm of 1859 that was documented by Richard Carrington (see the
Carrington event
[nasa.gov]).
The latest articles are documenting the possibility that a large event from the Sun could fry transformers leaving the civilized world in the dark ages. The concern extends to the fact that traditional wired communications could basically cease operation almost instantly. Powered life support, comfort and sanitation systems would cease operation. Living or working anywhere that requires (for instance,) pumped water such as multi-story buildings would loose all water supply. They are predicting that replacing and repairing all of the effected systems could take weeks to months.
So, have you given it any thought? What would you do? What preparations have you been doing/thinking about? Is it all just another doomsday prediction that won't come to pass?
